Thawte Microsoft Authenticode Enrollment using Windows 2000 or Windows XP

Enrollment takes place via Thawte Certificate Center (TCC) and the following steps outline how to to obtain the mykey.pvk and mycert.spc files properly.

Creation of the mycert.pvk file during Enrollment

  1. During enrollment, select the radio button option to Backup the private key:

  2.  The default path of C:\mykey.pvk will appear. Change the path if desired.
  3.  After clicking Continue, the following request will be asked from Windows:

  4.   Next you will asked to save the private key. Select Yes

  5. Complete the remaining enrollment and submit the order.

Obtaining the mycert.spc file

  1. Upon order completion, the Technical Contact will receive an email to install the mycert.spc file.
  2. Follow the instructions to install the certificate.
  3. Upon successful installation, the mycert.spc file must be exported from Internet Explorer.

Exporting the mycert.spc file

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Click Tools > Internet options > Content tab > Certificates button
  3. You should see the Code Signing certificate under the Personal tab.
  4. Click on the certificate you wish to export
  5. Click Export
  6. The export wizard will open
  7. Select the radio button for No, do not export the private key (in this case the private key file is generated and obtained in Step 1 above).
  8. Click Next
  9. Select Base-64 Encoded X.509 (.cer)
  10. Click Next
  11. The file must be saved now. Click browse to specify the location you wish save the file to, and provide a name.
  12. Click Save
  13. Click Next
  14. Click Finish
  15. Locate the file that was created. Rename the extension from .cer to .spc.
