Thawte SSL Assistant Instructions – IIS (Windows)

Description

This document provides instructions for using the Thawte SSL Assistant on Windows.

PLEASE NOTE: The Thawte SSL Assistant is supported on the following Windows platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 with IIS 7.0
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 with IIS 8.0
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 with IIS 8.5
     

*Must be running Microsoft .Net Framework 4.5 or later.
To determine which versions versions and service pack levels of Microsoft .Net framework are installed, see Microsoft Article ID: 318785 for more information.
 

Using the Thawte SSL Assistant to Generate a CSR on Windows:

Step 1: Download the Thawte SSL Assistant

  1. Download the Thawte SSL Assistant for Windows
  2. The ZIP file contains the following files:
    • sslassistant.exe
    • sslassistant.exe.config
    • readme.txt

NOTE: It is highly recommended that you download the Thawte SSL Assistant onto the server you plan to install your certificate on.

Step 2: Install the Thawte SSL Assistant

  1. Move sslassistant.exe, sslassistant.exe.config, and readme.txt files to the server where you will install the certificate.

Step 3: Open the Thawte SSL Assistant

  1. Double-click the sslassistant.exe file to launch the SSL Assistant.
  2. You MUST agree to the Thawte SSL Assistant Legal Agreement before you will be able to proceed further.

     

     
  3. Once you have agreed to the terms, click Continue.
  4. Click Generate CSR.


     
  5. Enter the information you would like to see on your certificate:
    • Organization Name: Enter the organization’s legal name registering for this certificate.
    • Department: Enter the department that will be using this certificate. Note that this field is OPTIONAL.
    • Country: Select the country where the business is registered from the drop down list.
    • State/Province: Enter the state or province where the business is registered. If your organization is registered in a country that does not have a state/province, you can use the city that the business is registered in. Please DO NOT abbreviate the State or Province name.
    • City: Enter the city where the business is legally registered.
    • Website: Enter the website that will be secured with your certificate. For example, www.example.com.

  6. Once all your information is entered and algorithm type, click Continue.


     
  7. Select where you would like to store your CSR file and designate a file name for the CSR. Or copy the CSR to clipboard (such as Notepad).
  8. Click Done.
     

     
  9. Open the CSR file, copy the text, and paste it into the CSR box on the CSR page within the enrollment flows.



Using the Thawte SSL Assistant to Install a Certificate on Windows:

 

      

Step 1: Download the Certificate:

 

Method 1:

 

Thawte will send you the SSL certificate via email.

Using a plain text editor such as Notepad, paste the content of the certificate.

 

You should then have a text file that looks like.


-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----

[encoded data]

-----END CERTIFICATE-----

 

Make sure you have 5 dashes to either side of the BEGIN CERTIFICATE and END CERTIFICATE and that no white space, extra line breaks or additional characters have been inadvertently added.

 

Method 2:

 

Download the certificate from Thawte Certificate Center (TCC).

 

Note:

If you install the certificate received by email, or if you download it from your Thawte Certificate Center (TCC) account in PKCS#7 format, save it with the extension .txt or .p7b

If you install the certificate downloaded from your Thawte Certificate Center (TCC) account in x.509 format, save it with the extension .txt or .cer and before continuing with the installation of the certificate, install the intermediate.

 

Step 2: Download the Thawte SSL Assistant

: If you have already downloaded and installed the SSL Assistant, please proceed to Step 5

  1. Download the Thawte SSL Assistant
  2. The ZIP file contains the following files: 
    • sslassistant.exe
    • sslassistant.exe.config
    • readme.txt

NOTE: It is highly recommended that you download the Thawte SSL Assistant onto the server you plan to install your certificate on.


Step 3: Install the Thawte SSL Assistant

  1. Move sslassistant.exe, sslassistant.exe.config, and readme.txt files to the server where you will install the certificate.


Step 4: Open the Thawte SSL Assistant

  1. Double-click the sslassistant.exe file to launch the SSL Assistant.
  2. You MUST agree to the Thawte SSL Assistant Legal Agreement before you will be able to proceed further.

  3. Once you have agreed to the terms, click Continue.
  4. Click Install Certificate.


     
  5. Thawte SSL Assistant provides two radio button option to install a certificate.
    • Customer who has a Thawte Certificate Center (TCC) account, use Automatically download and install my certificate - Enter your Thawte Certificate Center (TCC) username, password and order number of the certificate and click Continue. SSL Assistant will download and install your certificate.
       
    • Customer who does not have Thawte Certificate Center (TCC) account, use Install a certificate I already downloaded - Click Browse to locate the certificate you already downloaded on the server and click Continue to install your certificate.

  6. Enter the binding information for the SSL Certificate:
    • Site: select the site that this certificate will be securing.
    • Port: designate which server port you want your SSL Certificate to use. Typically, this is port 443 for certificates.



       
  7. Once you have designated both the site and the port, click Continue.
  8. Click Done.
